Moel Y Garn

The walk up Moel Y Garn rewards you with views across Cardigan Bay that stretch for miles on a clear day. It's a proper hill rather than a mountain - 573 metres - which means it's steep enough to feel like an achievement without taking all afternoon. From Aberystwyth, you're looking at a couple of hours' drive inland towards the Cambrian Mountains, but it's well worth the effort if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Cambrian Coast or Aber Camping.

The summit itself has an iron age fort, which gives the walk extra purpose beyond just the legs-burning trek. You can see the earthworks clearly enough, and there's something satisfying about standing on a spot people chose to defend two thousand years ago. The terrain is moorland and rough grass - proper walking boots essential, especially after rain when it turns to bog.

Allow three hours return from the car park, less if you're fit. It's the kind of walk that appeals to walkers who want views without the tourist crowds of Snowdonia, and families with older kids will find it manageable. Toddlers and prams, frankly, won't cut it here. The weather rolls in fast from the coast, so go early and check conditions first - I've seen the summit vanish into cloud within twenty minutes of arrival.

Free to walk, obviously. No facilities at the top, so bring water and snacks. It's a solid half-day out that combines landscape, history, and genuine effort.
