Moel y Faen

The walk up Moel y Faen from Ruthin takes about 90 minutes each way, and on a clear day you'll understand why the locals bother. It's a proper fell rather than a gentle stroll - the path climbs steadily through woodland before opening out onto heathland with views that stretch across the Vale of Clwyd towards Snowdonia.

What you're looking at from the 554-metre summit is real walking country. The Clwydian Range spreads out like a spine down Denbighshire, and if the clouds behave themselves, you can pick out the distant peaks inland. The actual peak itself is unremarkable - a trig point and some cairns - but that's not really the point. You come for the walking and the views.

This suits hill walkers and anyone comfortable with a proper hike. It's not a doddle, especially in wet conditions when the path gets boggy, but it's nothing extreme either. Families with older kids would manage it fine, though younger ones might find the 180-minute round trip tedious. Allow three hours to be comfortable.

There's no cafe at the top, no facilities to speak of. Bring water and something to eat. Free to access, naturally - it's a Welsh hillside.

If you're based at Clwydian Glamping Pods just outside Ruthin, Moel y Faen makes for a cracking day out. You're looking at a short drive to the trailhead, and the walking here is far less crowded than the Snowdonia peaks further west.
