Moel Ty-Newydd

The walk up Moel Ty-Newydd rewards you with views that stretch across the Clwydian Range, and on a clear day you can see right into Cheshire. It's not a vast peak - more of a proper hill walk than a mountain expedition - but that's rather the point. The path from Ruthin is straightforward enough, taking you up through farmland and moorland in about an hour depending on your pace.

The summit itself is modest, no dramatic stone cairn or wind-battered shelter, but the quiet matters here. You're far enough from main roads that the only sound is likely wind and sheep. Walkers get the most from this one, especially those basing themselves at Clwydian Glamping Pods a few miles away - you can be up and down before lunch. Families with older kids who don't mind a steady incline will manage it fine, though toddlers might find the final stretch tedious.

The real appeal is solitude and those expansive views without the crowds that plague the bigger Clwydian summits. Go early in the day or on a weekday if you can. Wear proper boots because the moorland can be boggy even days after rain, and bring a map - there's no signposting up there. Free to walk, naturally. Allow two to three hours return from Ruthin depending on fitness and how long you linger on top.
