Moel Truan

The walk up Moel Truan takes about an hour from the village of Ruthin, and it's one of those hills that feels deceptively bigger as you climb. You're looking at proper moorland terrain - gorse, heather, the occasional bog patch - rather than anything manicured or managed. The summit itself isn't dramatic, just rounded and open, but the views across Denbighshire are genuinely excellent. On a clear day you can see right into the Vale of Clwyd with the Clwydian Range rolling away to the north.

This is walkers' country, frankly. Families with small children will find the ascent a slog, and there's not much at the top to linger over - no café, no facilities, just wind and grassland. But if you've got teenagers who can manage rough ground, or you're a serious rambler wanting half a day's proper walking without needing climbing gear, it's well worth the effort. The terrain can be boggy after rain, so check conditions before you go.

Stay at Clwydian Glamping Pods and Campsite just 2.6 miles away - excellent spot, five-star rated, and it gives you a proper base for exploring the Clwydian range. Moel Truan is best tackled as part of a longer walking day; don't expect shops or amenities nearby. Early morning is your friend here, fewer people and clearer light for photographs.
