Moel Hiraddug

The walk up Moel Hiraddug rewards you with proper views across the whole North Wales coast, and it's not a slog to get there either. The peak sits inland from Rhyl, rising to just under 600 metres, which means you're climbing but not suffering - most fit walkers manage it in under two hours return.

What you get at the top is genuinely worth the effort. The panorama stretches from the Conwy estuary across to the Irish Sea on clear days, with the Clwydian Range rolling away behind you. There's a trig point marking the summit, and on weekends you'll likely find other walkers up there, which is nice rather than crowded.

The terrain is mostly moorland and well-worn footpath - good underfoot even after rain, though it does get boggy in patches. Come prepared for wind (the Welsh coast throws it at you) and take layers. The walk suits families with older kids and regular hikers best; younger children might find the steady gradient dull rather than exciting.

If you're staying at Golden Sands or Parkdean Resorts Ty Mawr, you're within striking distance for a half-day outing. The whole thing - park to summit to cup of tea back in Rhyl - takes maybe four hours. It's free to walk, obviously, and there's no restriction on access times. Early morning gets you up before the wind picks up, and the light's better for photographs anyway.
