Moel Golomen

The walk up Moel Golomen takes you through proper Cardigan Bay country, with views that stretch all the way to the coast near Aberystwyth on a clear day. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like Snowdon - but that's rather the point. The climb is steady and manageable, the kind of walk where you actually notice the landscape changing as you go higher rather than just huffing your way to the top.

This is one for walkers who like their exercise without the scramble. Families with kids aged eight or so upwards will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the slog tedious. The real appeal is the sense of isolation you get up there - proper wild moorland with very few people about, even on weekends. You'll see sheep, maybe red kite if you're lucky, and on decent weather days the views justify the effort.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the peak itself, so bring water and something to eat. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip depending on your pace. It's free to walk, naturally - it's a Welsh mountain.
