Moel Garegog

The walk up Moel Garegog takes you through proper North Wales hill country, with views that stretch across Denbighshire and into the Clwydian Range. It's not a technical climb - more a steady trudge through moorland and bracken - but the payoff at the top makes the effort worthwhile. On a clear day, you can see right across to the Shropshire plains.

This is squarely walker territory. The summit sits at around 1,800 feet, so it'll take most people between 45 minutes and an hour to get up from the nearest car park. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find it a bit relentless. The route itself is straightforward enough - no scrambling or dodgy bits - though the moorland can be boggy in wet weather, so proper boots are essential.

Ruthin, just down the road, makes a sensible base for a night or two. If you're camping at Clwydian Glamping Pods and Campsite (about six miles from the peak), you've got yourself a proper hiking headquarters. The pod sites are well-regarded, and from there you can tick off several Clwydian walks without much driving about.

The mountain itself doesn't demand hours of your time. Get up, soak in the view, descend. It's not complicated, but that's rather the point. A decent half-day activity that doesn't require specialist kit or endless planning. Go when the weather's settled - the views vanish entirely in low cloud, and there's nothing much to see then.
