Moel Fodig

The walk up Moel Fodig from Ruthin takes you through proper hill country without the commitment of tackling something like the Clwydian Ridge proper. It's a decent afternoonAffair - around two hours there and back if you're not dawdling, with views across Denbighshire that make the effort worthwhile.

You'll get sheep, bracken, and that particular Welsh wind that seems to come from nowhere. The summit itself isn't dramatic - just a grassy top with a trig point - but on a clear day you can see right across to the vale. Families with older kids and reasonably fit walkers will manage this no bother. Younger children might find the initial climb a slog, especially if it's wet.

Start from the edge of Ruthin itself and follow the marked paths uphill. The routes are straightforward enough, though the ground can be boggy in places even when it hasn't rained recently. Allow time for mucking about at the top rather than just touching the trig and heading back down.

If you're staying at Clwydian Glamping Pods and Campsite just down the road, this makes an ideal morning or early afternoon outing. It scratches the "walked somewhere" itch without eating your whole day. The views from the top are the draw here rather than any facilities or points of interest - there's nothing much at the summit itself - but that's precisely why it works. No crowds, genuine quietness, and proper fresh air. On a grey Welsh day it can feel a bit austere, but that's rather the point.
