Moel Fferm

The walk up Moel Fferm rewards you with proper views across Cardigan Bay and inland towards the Cambrian Mountains. It's a modest peak by Welsh standards, but that's rather the point - this isn't a gruelling slog. Most walkers manage the ascent in under an hour from the road, and the summit itself sits at a comfortable 1,624 feet, making it accessible without needing the kit of a serious mountaineer.

What draws people here is the combination of quiet moorland walking and the payoff at the top. On a clear day you can see right across to Snowdonia. The landscape is rough and windswept, typical of this part of Ceredigion, with sheep grazing on the slopes and precious little else to distract you. It's the sort of walk where you'll see far more sky than people.

This suits families after a decent outdoors afternoon without overcommitting to a full day's hiking, and walkers who want to tick off a Welsh hill without the crowds you'd get on Pen y Ghent or Snowdon. Allow two to three hours for a comfortable round trip with time at the top. The best approach is from the minor roads south of Aberystwyth - park near the base and head up from there.

Moel Fferm pairs well with a stay at Aber Camping or Forester's Retreat Glamping, both within five miles. Either makes a solid base for exploring the Ceredigion coast and inland walks without being slammed into a tourist trap. Honestly, if you're staying in the area, it deserves an afternoon of your time.
