Moel Feity

The walk up Moel Feity takes you straight into proper mountain country, even though at 1,969 feet it's not going to exhaust you. From Brecon, this peak sits on the eastern edge of the Beacons range, and the ascent is fairly straightforward if you don't mind a bit of grind through moorland. The views from the top sweep across the broader Beacons massif - on a clear day you're looking at a serious chunk of Mid Wales laid out below. Weather changes fast up here though, so go prepared.

This is the sort of walk that appeals to hikers who want a proper outing without needing ropes and crampons. Families with older kids (ten and up) will manage it fine; younger ones might find the final push tedious. A leisurely ascent and descent takes around three to four hours depending on your route and how many times you stop to catch your breath. There's nothing manufactured about it - no visitor centre, no café at the top, just you and the landscape.

If you're staying at one of the glamping spots nearby - Aber Glamping is barely a mile away - it's an obvious choice for a morning escape before heading back for coffee. Brecon Beacons Camping & Caravan Park, about four miles out, is equally convenient. The mountain itself costs nothing and goes year-round, though winter visibility can be grim. Worth doing when you've got decent weather and a few hours spare.
