Cefn Cul

The walk up Cefn Cul from Brecon isn't the most famous route through the Beacons, which actually works in its favour. You get proper solitude without the crowds that pile onto Pen y Fan. The peak itself sits at a decent height with views that stretch across Mid Wales - on a clear day you can see why people bothered building settlements down here centuries ago.

It's a straightforward walk, nothing too technical, though the final push is a bit steep for what turns out to be a modest summit. Most people allow two to three hours return from Brecon town itself. The terrain is mixed - some moorland, some boggy patches that'll test your boot waterproofing, and enough exposed stone to keep things interesting underfoot.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a place for lingering with a picnic - the wind can pick up something fierce - but it's ideal if you want to bag a peak without the tourist infrastructure. Families with young legs might find it a touch demanding; older kids who've done a few hills will be fine.
