Moel Dol-frwynog

The walk up Moel Dol-frwynog from Dolgellau rewards you with views that make the effort genuinely worthwhile. It's not a massive peak - 860 metres - but the route is steep enough in places that you'll feel you've earned the summit. The whole thing takes a couple of hours there and back if you're a moderate walker, though you could stretch it to three hours if you meander on the descent.

What makes this particular walk stand out is how it feels properly wild without being dangerous. You get genuine mountain scenery - exposed ridges, proper views across the Cader Idris range, and on a clear day you can see right down to Barmouth. The path itself is well-worn but rocky underfoot, so decent boots aren't optional. Walkers should allow time for the scrambling sections near the top.

Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might struggle with the steeper bits. It's the sort of walk where you're always moving forward, which keeps morale up. The terrain isn't technical - just relentless in gradient.

If you're staying at Llwyn yr Helm or Torrent Walk Campsite nearby, this makes an excellent half-day outing. Both sites are close enough to Dolgellau that you can park in town and start from there without faffing about. Early starts win here - the mountain gets busy by lunchtime in summer, and the weather can turn quickly. Bring waterproofs even if it looks clear.
