Moel Ddefaid

The walk up Moel Ddefaid from Betws-y-Coed is steep and relentless, but you'll understand why within about forty minutes. The summit sits at 600 metres and the views across the Conwy Valley are genuinely worth the effort - Snowdon looms in the distance, and on a clear day you can trace the river winding through the valley floor below.

It's a proper hill walk rather than a casual stroll. The path climbs through woodland initially, then opens out onto moorland with better footing towards the top. Allow two and a half to three hours for the round trip if you're not particularly speedy. Families with older kids who've done a bit of walking will manage fine, but younger children might struggle with the gradient and find the moorland section a touch boring once the novelty wears off.

There's no charge to access the mountain - it's open access land. The nearest town, Betws-y-Coed, is your obvious base and has everything you need for supplies before heading out. If you're staying at Maenan Abbey Caravan Park or Erw Glas Glamping and Camping nearby, this makes a brilliant half-day excursion that justifies the slightly cloudier weather on a Welsh holiday. Don't come expecting crowds or facilities. Come for the leg work and the views, and you'll leave satisfied.
