Moatside Lane

Head out from Durham towards Moatside Lane and you're stepping back into medieval England - this is where a proper fortified manor once stood, the kind of place that mattered when the Normans were consolidating power in the North. The site itself is fairly understated now, which is either refreshing or disappointing depending on how much reconstruction you were hoping for. What remains are earthworks and the atmospheric bones of the structure, enough to give you a sense of scale if you know what you're looking at.

It's the sort of place that works best if you're already into medieval Durham - local history enthusiasts will find it genuinely rewarding, but casual visitors expecting dramatic ruins might feel it's more of a detour than a destination. The walk out there from Durham is pleasant enough, and if you're staying at one of the caravan parks dotted around the area (Durham Grange is closest at 2.3 miles, or Grove Farm a touch further out), it makes a decent half-day outing to break up the campsite routine.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though there's not much in the way of formal facilities or interpretation on site - bring a decent guidebook or do your homework beforehand if you want to get the most from it. Kids will likely lose interest within twenty minutes unless they're already hooked on medieval history. Allow an hour if you're thorough, less if you're just having a look around.
