Mitchell Green

A stretch of wetland and grassland that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards those who take the time to poke around. Mitchell Green, east of Wisbech, is proper fenland - the kind of place where you'll see lapwings, reed warblers, and if you're lucky, a marsh harrier cutting through the reeds. The walking is easy and flat, which makes it ideal if you've got younger kids or anyone who doesn't fancy climbing hills. Allow an hour or two depending on how serious you get with binoculars and bird identification.

It's the sort of reserve that suits a specific kind of visitor. Birdwatchers will have a field day, particularly in spring and early summer when breeding birds are vocal and visible. Photographers after natural light and wildlife shots should come early. Families wanting a gentle potter and fresh air will find it pleasant enough, though there's not much to keep restless toddlers entertained beyond "look, a duck". The flat terrain and open views mean you're never far from the car, which is helpful if things go pear-shaped.
