Mine Cart

Art in an old mining cart sounds daft until you're actually standing in front of it. Mine Cart is a gallery tucked away in Durham that takes its name seriously - the whole thing centres on industrial heritage and contemporary work that plays with that theme. It's quite small, which means you won't need more than 45 minutes to an hour unless you're really into reading every label and soaking up the atmosphere.

The appeal here is pretty specific. If you're into industrial history or contemporary art that actually has something to say, you'll find it worthwhile. Families with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming - there's not much hands-on stuff and a seven-year-old will likely get restless. Walkers passing through Durham for the day could easily slot this in before heading to one of the parks nearby like Finchale Abbey or Grove Farm.

It's free to get in, which at least means you're not out of pocket if it doesn't grab you. Timing-wise, midweek mornings are quieter, so you'll get a proper look without crowds getting in the way. The location works well if you're camped at one of the sites dotted around Durham - Andy's Woodland or West Hall Glamping are both close enough for a quick drive. Don't expect something fancy or Instagram-worthy, though. Mine Cart is honest, a bit rough around the edges, and genuinely interesting if you like that sort of thing.
