Milton Roro

The stone circle at Milton Roro sits quietly in the Perthshire landscape, easy to miss if you're not paying attention. It's a Bronze Age ring of weathered stones - nothing flashy, just authentic archaeology you can actually walk up to and touch without rope barriers or gift shop queues.

What draws you here is the sheer ordinariness of it. These stones have been standing for around 4,000 years, which puts things in perspective fast. You'll spend perhaps 20 minutes here, walking around the circle, checking sightlines to distant hills, trying to work out what the builders saw in this spot. No interpretation boards to hold your hand - it's just you, the stones, and open moorland.

History buffs will appreciate this more than casual visitors. If you've got kids under ten, they might find it all a bit abstract unless you've got them interested in Bronze Age settlement patterns already. Walkers, though - this is your territory. The site sits well within reach of Pitlochry and makes sense as a stop on a longer ramble through the Perthshire hills.

Kilvrecht Campsite, about six miles away, offers a comfortable base if you're doing a park holiday in the area. Milton Roro works best as part of a walking day rather than a destination in itself. Go if you're already exploring the region. Skip it if you're pressed for time or after something more visually dramatic.
