Milnthorpe Hill

The walk up Milnthorpe Hill is mercifully short and perfectly suited to anyone staying at one of the holiday parks dotted around the village. It's barely a hill by Lake District standards - more of a proper bump - but the views across Morecambe Bay and towards the Pennines make it well worth the twenty-minute trudge. The path starts from Milnthorpe itself, climbing steadily without any of the huffing and puffing you'd endure on bigger peaks. From the top you get a genuine sense of how the landscape opens out here, sandwiched between the fells and the bay. It's the kind of walk families with younger kids won't find tedious, and older walkers won't feel shortchanged by. The height gain is modest enough that you could knock this out before breakfast and still have the whole day ahead. Fell End Holiday Park and Little Acre are practically on the doorstep, making this an obvious choice for a half-hour leg-stretch between arriving and settling into your caravan. Go early morning if you can - the light across the bay is proper lovely before the day gets going. There's nothing fancy about it, no facilities at the summit, just decent views and the satisfaction of ticking off a walk without it eating into your holiday time. Clear days reward you; cloudy ones are less thrilling but the scramble down is quick enough. Ideal for breaking up a longer walking itinerary rather than a standalone trip, but absolutely worth doing if you're based locally.
