Milner Royd Nature Park

A modest woodland walk above Elland that punches above its weight if you catch it right. Milner Royd Nature Park is essentially a steep valley carved out by a stream, with towpath and forest paths running alongside. The trees are proper ancient here - oak and birch mostly - and the stream tumbles over small cascades that look far more dramatic after rain.

It's the kind of place locals know and visitors skip, which is a shame. The walking isn't taxing but it's not flat either; the paths climb and dip as you follow the water downhill. Budget an hour for a steady loop, longer if you stop to actually look at things. Spring brings bluebells thick on the woodland floor, and you'll spot kingfishers if you're patient and quiet by the water.

Families with primary-school-age kids will get decent mileage from it. Toddlers might struggle with the slopes and tree roots. Photographers and bird-watchers should visit early morning. The park sits just off the main roads into Elland, making it a natural break if you're based at Old Chamber Camping nearby.

It's free, naturally. No cafe, no facilities really - bring your own drink. The Yorkshire landscape around here is all steep valleys and old mill towns, and this park gives you the green bit without the industrial heritage centre experience. Worth the detour on a decent day, though nothing that'll change your life.
