Millhills

The Bronze Age settlement at Millhills sits on a hillside just outside Crieff, and it's one of those places that rewards a bit of effort to find. What you're looking at are the remains of circular hut platforms - stone foundations where people actually lived over 3,000 years ago. There's not much left to the untrained eye, but stand there and look at the landscape, and you start to understand why someone chose this exact spot. The views across Perthshire are proper good.

This is archaeology for people who actually enjoy thinking about the past rather than just being told about it. Families with older kids who can manage a decent walk will get something from it. Younger children might find it a bit underwhelming - it's not a dramatic ruin or anything, just earthworks and stone scatters. History buffs and archaeology students will absolutely appreciate the Bronze Age context and how the site relates to broader settlement patterns in the Tayside region.

There's no visitor facility or interpretation board that I could find, so coming armed with a bit of research makes the visit more meaningful. Allow an hour including the walk up. It's free to visit, and you can access it pretty much any time. The nearest proper facilities are back in Crieff itself.

Comrie Croft, 5.9 miles out, gives you easy access too. Combine it with walks around the Crieff area - there's plenty to keep you occupied for a few days.
