Mill Hill

You'll be climbing for a proper haul to reach Mill Hill's summit, but the effort pays off once you get to the top. Essex hills don't come much higher than this, and on a clear day the views stretch across the Thames Valley and into Kent - genuinely impressive from this corner of the county.

The walk itself is straightforward enough. There's a decent path up from the Meopham side, and it's the sort of climb that feels genuinely rewarding without being brutal. Walkers will get the most satisfaction here, though families with older kids who don't mind a bit of a scramble will find it doable. The summit's not dramatic - no trig point or stone marker - but the open ground and 360-degree vistas make it clear you've reached somewhere worthwhile.

Timing matters. Early morning or late afternoon light transforms the walk, and you'll avoid the afternoon crowds if there are any. There's no entrance fee or facilities at the top, so bring water. Allow a solid hour or so for the climb and time at the summit to actually look around.

If you're staying at Badgells Wood Camping or Kits Coty Glamping nearby, this makes an excellent morning walk before heading elsewhere in the day. It's close enough not to eat up your whole morning, but substantial enough to feel like proper exercise. Not a must-do, but worth the detour if you're walking through the area anyway.
