Blaze Wood

A proper woodland walk through Blaze Wood near Meopham takes you away from the Kent commuter belt for an hour or so. Nothing fancy - just trees, footpaths, and the occasional clearing where you can actually see sky. The canopy's thick enough that even on drizzly days it stays reasonably dry underfoot, which is something.

This is walker territory, full stop. Kids will manage it fine if they're the sort who don't need a gift shop at the end, but it's not a destination in itself - more of a leg-stretcher if you're camping nearby. The paths wind through fairly standard English woodland: beech, oak, the usual suspects. On a clear day you get decent views across the Weald toward the North Downs, though nothing that'll stop you dead in your tracks.

If you're staying at Gatehouse Wood Country Park just down the road, or any of the other campsites within five miles - River View, Badgells Wood - Blaze Wood makes a convenient morning ramble. The Hop Farm, a bit further out, also uses this as a quick break from family farm attractions. Allow ninety minutes to two hours, depending on how lost you fancy getting.

Admission's free and there are no formal opening hours to worry about. Go early if you want it quiet. The ground can get boggy after heavy rain, so proper walking boots aren't optional.
