Mill Hill

Mill Hill nature reserve sits just outside Lancing, offering a proper slice of Sussex downland without the crowds you'd find at the more famous beauty spots nearby. It's a working landscape rather than a manicured visitor attraction - chalk grassland, scrub, and woodland that feels like it belongs to the birds and insects first, people second.

The walking here is straightforward. Paths wind through the reserve with decent views across the Weald, and on a clear day you can see proper distance. It's the sort of place where you might spot skylarks, rabbits, and if you're lucky, some of the rarer downland flowers in spring and early summer. Don't expect facilities or interpretation boards - this is honest countryside.

Walkers will get the most from Mill Hill. It's not a destination in itself, more a genuine stop during a longer ramble across the Sussex Downs. Families with young kids might find it a bit thin on activities after thirty minutes or so, though older children who like spotting wildlife will be engaged. The terrain isn't steep, which helps.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - The Barn, Eastern Sands, Beach Park, or Foot of the Downs are all within easy reach - it makes sense as a morning walk before heading to the coast. Pair it with other local reserves or a longer downland circuit to make a proper day of it. Free access, as far as anyone can tell, and you can visit whenever suits you.
