English Heritage - Bramber Castle

The motte and bailey ruins rising above the River Adur are what remain of a Norman fortress built by William de Braose not long after 1066. You're looking at a proper chunk of medieval Sussex - a commanding earthwork with stone walls that once dominated this valley crossing near Lancing. The site is modest compared to grander castles, but that's rather the point. This is archaeology as it actually happened, not a reconstructed theme park version.

What you get is a short walk up to the motte where you can see the bailey defences below and get a genuine sense of how these early Norman strongholds worked militarily. The views across the Adur valley are decent, though nothing jaw-dropping. Families with younger children might find it a bit slight - there's not masses to do beyond the walk and the viewing, so twenty minutes to half an hour covers it properly. History enthusiasts and walkers tackling the Downs will get more from it because you can connect it to the broader landscape story.

English Heritage runs it, so admission is either free or modest depending on current opening - worth checking ahead. The surrounding countryside is the real draw here. You're within striking distance of several caravan parks including Foot of the Downs and Downsview Park, both close enough for a morning visit before heading elsewhere. If you're basing yourself in Sussex for a holiday, slot this in as a brief stop on a longer walk rather than planning your day around it.
