Milestone Wood

A decent woodland walk just outside Battle, Milestone Wood gives you proper Sussex forest without the crowds you'd find at some of the bigger attractions round here. It's a straightforward patch of mixed woodland - nothing fancy, just trees, paths, and the occasional clearing where you can actually see where you're going.

The walk itself takes a couple of hours if you're ambling. Ground's soft underfoot most of the year, which is either lovely or muddy depending on when you visit and how much it's rained. Summer's probably your best bet for keeping boots relatively clean. There's enough here to hold kids' attention for an hour or so - fallen logs to clamber over, a bit of exploring potential - but it won't keep them occupied all day. Serious walkers might find it a touch tame, though it connects well enough with other paths in the area if you want to string together a longer route.

Free access, as far as I can tell, which is the main reason to bother. You're only a mile or so from Beech Estate Campsite if you're based at one of the holiday parks in the area - Seven Acre Woods and Crowhurst Park are also within spitting distance, so it's a handy morning outing before heading elsewhere. Worth the detour if you're camping locally and want a gentle stretch of legs, but don't go out of your way unless you're specifically after basic woodland walking.
