Milecastle 49

The Roman soldiers who built Milecastle 49 nearly 2,000 years ago probably didn't expect their barracks to still be standing in rural Northumberland. But here they are - crumbling stone walls rising from moorland just south of Haltwhistle, a tangible reminder that the Romans actually occupied this bleak corner of northern Britain.

What you're looking at is a small rectangular fort, one of dozens strung along Hadrian's Wall at mile intervals. The walls aren't dramatic - don't expect towering ramparts - but they're substantial enough to get a real sense of Roman military life. You can make out the gateway, internal buildings, and the defensive ditch. It's the kind of place where you spend twenty minutes poking around, working out where soldiers would have slept, eaten, and kept watch.

Walkers will appreciate it most. It's not a museum or visitor centre - just a site left to itself with interpretive panels - so you need to have some interest in archaeology to enjoy more than a quick look. The approach is straightforward enough from the nearby road, though the surrounding moorland can be bleak in poor weather.

Family visits depend entirely on your kids' tolerance for standing stones and reading about Roman logistics. Teenagers interested in history will find it worthwhile; younger children might manage fifteen minutes before asking to leave.

Base yourself at Haltwhistle Camping and Caravanning Club Site or the excellent Herding Hill Farm glamping five miles out, and you can weave Milecastle 49 into a proper Hadrian's Wall walk. Admission is free, and there's no formal opening times - you can visit whenever daylight permits.
