Milecastle 39 (Castle Nick)

You'll find yourself standing on high moorland near Haltwhistle, looking at what remains of a Roman fort that once guarded Hadrian's Wall two thousand years ago. Milecastle 39, also called Castle Nick, is essentially a rectangular stone outline - the foundations of a small garrison building where soldiers would have been stationed to patrol this stretch of frontier. What makes it worth the trip is the landscape itself. The walk up here offers proper views across the Northumberland hills, and you get a real sense of why the Romans chose this spot. There's no visitor centre, no interpretive boards, just you and the archaeology.

This works best for history enthusiasts and serious walkers rather than casual tourists. You're not getting reconstructed buildings or guided tours - it's raw archaeology. The site is free to access and open year-round, though conditions can be rough in winter. Allow an hour for the walk and a good twenty minutes to explore the site itself. The nearest town, Haltwhistle, is about six miles away and offers basic facilities.
