Milecastle

Walk along Hadrian's Wall near Haltwhistle and you'll stumble across the remains of Milecastle - one of the Roman army's garrison points from nearly 2,000 years ago. These small fortified structures sat roughly a mile apart along the wall's length, housing soldiers who monitored movement across the frontier. What you actually find is stone foundations and low walls, often half-buried in grass and moorland - nothing glamorous, but genuinely atmospheric if you know what you're looking at.

The real appeal here is the walking. This isn't a destination in itself - it's a reason to spend an afternoon rambling the wall's ridge, taking in the Northumberland landscape. History enthusiasts will find themselves hooked by the tactical thinking behind the placement; kids might manage twenty minutes before asking about ice cream. The site costs nothing and you're free to explore at any hour.

Plan to spend an hour or two if you're combining several milecastles into a longer wall walk. The terrain varies from easy to moderately steep depending on which section you tackle. Come when the weather's decent - grey November afternoons here feel genuinely bleak rather than atmospheric.

If you're basing yourself at Haltwhistle Camping and Caravanning Club Site or the excellent Herding Hill Farm, Milecastle makes an excellent half-day excursion. The walks are proper rewarding, though don't expect it to occupy a full day on its own.
