Mild Scar

The walk up Mild Scar from Biggar is straightforward enough, and the summit rewards you with proper expansive views across the Lowlands. It's not dramatic - no sharp ridges or vertiginous drops - but there's something honest about it. You get south towards the Border country, north towards the Pentlands, and on a clear day the visibility is genuinely impressive for somewhere only just over 600 metres.

It's the kind of walk that suits families with decent legs or anyone after a couple of hours outdoors without the scrambling nonsense. The terrain's manageable, the paths are well-trodden, and you won't need technical kit. Allow two to three hours depending on your pace and how long you want to linger at the top.

Timing-wise, go midweek if you can - weekends bring the locals out, which isn't a problem except the small car park fills quickly. Morning light works better than afternoon if you want photos that don't look washed out.

If you're camping or caravanning nearby - Mount View Caravan Park sits just a few miles away - this pairs nicely with a full Lowland walking week. It's not a headline attraction that'll make you drive an hour out of your way, but if you're based around Biggar for a few days, it's well worth the walk.
