Middleton House Site

The ruins of Middleton House lie just outside Carmarthen, a scattered collection of stone foundations and walls that tell the story of a once-substantial Welsh manor. There's not much left standing - mostly low walls and overgrown earthworks - but what draws visitors is the chance to piece together how the gentry lived in this part of Carmarthenshire centuries ago.

You won't find grand archways or intact rooms here. Instead, you're walking through someone's actual floorplan, tracing where the hall would have been, where kitchens and outbuildings stood. It's the sort of place that appeals to local history enthusiasts and anyone interested in how medieval Welsh life actually worked, rather than the castle-visiting crowd. Families with younger children might find it a bit thin - there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no café. You need to bring your own curiosity and maybe a decent guidebook.

The site is free to access and takes about 30 minutes to properly explore, though you could spend longer if you're sketching or photographing. Go on a clear day when the light picks out the stone edges. Winter isn't ideal - the site gets muddy and overgrown vegetation obscures the layout.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Coedhirion Farm or Towy Valley are closest - Middleton House works as a morning detour rather than a full day out. Combine it with Carmarthen town itself for a bit more substance to your visit.
