Allt Fawr

The woodland at Allt Fawr, just outside Carmarthen, is proper countryside - dense forest with good walking trails that actually feel like you're getting somewhere. It's the kind of place where the canopy closes in above you and you can hear nothing but your own footsteps and the occasional bird.

You're looking at a genuine forest walk rather than a manicured country park. Bring decent boots if you've had rain - the paths can get boggy, and tree roots love catching toes. Allow a couple of hours for a proper explore without rushing; families with young kids might find an hour enough before someone needs a snack break. The terrain isn't hugely demanding, but it's uneven enough to keep you engaged.

It works well as a morning or afternoon stop if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Towy Valley is barely two miles away, or Coedhirion Farm if you fancy something a bit different. The Carmarthen area has decent facilities for supplies, and the forest gives you proper space away from everything when you need it.

This isn't a destination in itself. It's what you go for when you want to stretch your legs in actual woodland rather than spend time at a visitor centre. History types won't find much here; walkers and kids who enjoy climbing over fallen trees and finding streams will get the most from it.
