Middle Home Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination in itself, Middle Home Wood sits just outside Lewes and delivers exactly what you'd hope for from a Sussex forest - dense tree cover, decent paths, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you left the town behind. The wood isn't vast, so you're looking at maybe an hour to ninety minutes maximum to explore it properly without rushing.

It's ideal for families with walkers aged eight and up. Younger kids might find it a bit samey after half an hour, but if your lot enjoys spotting wildlife and climbing over the occasional fallen log, they'll be occupied. Dog owners love it - there's room to let them off lead and they rarely encounter crowds. The forest floor is soft underfoot after rain, which beats trudging along chalky paths, though it does get muddy in winter.

There's no visitor centre or facilities, so bring what you need. It's free access, which is always appreciated. The real value here is how it slots into a longer day - combine it with a morning in Lewes town centre, then head out to the wood for fresh air before lunch. If you're staying at The Secret Campsite or Blackberry Wood - both cracking spots just down the road - this is genuinely your back garden. Wild Boar Wood Campsite isn't far either and offers the same setup.

Worth the detour? Only if you're in the area already. As a standalone trip from further afield, probably not. But as part of a Sussex break centred on Lewes, it's a proper tonic.
