Mid Lodge

But this is Mid Lodge, an Iron Age hill fort that once commanded the surrounding countryside, and standing on it transforms your sense of scale. The views across Perthshire unfold properly from up here, and you understand immediately why someone chose this spot two thousand years ago.

It's not a place dripping with interpretation boards or reconstructed ramparts. What you get is the raw archaeology - the earthworks still visible, the sense of settlement, the strategic vantage point. That's honestly more compelling than a lot of over-worked heritage sites. You'll spend twenty minutes here, maybe thirty if you're thorough about photographing the vista or puzzling out the fort's layout.

Archaeology enthusiasts will find it worthwhile, though you'd want to combine it with other local sites to make a proper afternoon of it. Families with younger children might find it a bit tame unless they're genuinely engaged by prehistoric stuff - there's no climb really, and limited facilities.
