Mid Hill

The walk up Mid Hill from Biggar takes about forty minutes if you're moving at a steady pace, and the payoff is a proper panoramic view across the Lowlands. You're standing at 1,897 feet on what feels like a genuine summit - not one of those underwhelming bumps some tourist boards try to flog as a peak. On a clear day, you can see right across to the Southern Uplands, and on the rare cloudless afternoon, the perspective really does justify the climb.

It's a decent outing for families with older kids and serious walkers. Youngsters under eight might find the ascent tedious without much in the way of wayside distractions, though the moorland terrain is straightforward enough. The route itself is well-trodden and doesn't require specialist kit - proper boots help on the muddier stretches, especially after rain.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the summit, which means you'll want to pack your own refreshment. The whole experience takes two to three hours start to finish if you're not rushing. Biggar itself is only a mile or so away, so it's easily combined with a proper lunch in town before or after.
