Mid Fell

The walk up Mid Fell is straightforward enough, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's a doddle. It's a proper slog once you commit, and the summit rewards you with views across South Ayrshire that stretch on for miles when the weather plays ball.

You're looking at roughly two hours up and back from Maybole, so it's ideal if you want a decent hill walk without burning the whole day. The path is well-trodden, which means it can get boggy in patches - waterproof boots aren't optional, they're essential. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find it a bit punishing on the legs.

What makes it worth the effort is the isolation. You won't be queuing or fighting for a spot to catch your breath. On a clear day, the panorama is genuinely impressive - you get proper Scottish Lowland geography laid out below. On a grey day, it's moody and atmospheric, which has its own appeal.
