Mickelmiares Lake

The water at Mickelmiares is oddly still on most days, reflecting the flat Yorkshire sky back at you like a mirror. It's a proper working nature reserve just inland from Bridlington, the sort of place where you'll actually see things if you're patient - wigeon, teal, the occasional heron picking its way through the shallows. The walks around the perimeter are straightforward and fairly level, which means families with younger kids won't be battling steep terrain, though the lack of shade can be a bother on hot days. There's real appeal here if you're into birds and wetland ecology, though be honest with yourself: if you're expecting drama or sweeping vistas, you'll be disappointed. This is subtle. Quiet. The kind of place that rewards you for slowing down rather than ticking boxes. It works brilliantly as a morning visit during a longer Bridlington week, especially if you're staying at South Cliff Holiday Park just down the road. Pair it with a proper coastal walk afterwards and you've got a decent day sorted. Allow an hour or so unless you've got binoculars and serious ornithological ambitions - then you could easily spend twice that. Spring and autumn migrations are obviously the peak times if birds are your thing, but even in winter there's usually something worthwhile to spot.
