Micheldever Recreation Ground

The walk out to Micheldever feels longer than the map suggests, winding past fields before the ground proper appears. It's a working nature reserve rather than a manicured visitor attraction - benches scattered about, rough grassland, the occasional information board nailed to a post.

This is for people who actually want to spend time with birds and wildflowers, not those after a quick photo stop. The reserve attracts decent numbers of warblers in spring and summer, and the open water attracts wildfowl year-round. You're looking at a couple of hours here if you're serious about spotting things; half an hour if you're just passing through from Winchester.

It works well as part of a broader walking day around Hampshire. The Spinney Caravan Park sits just five miles away, which is close enough for a morning or afternoon excursion without shifting your base. The ground itself costs nothing and doesn't demand entry times - you turn up when you feel like it, really.

Bring binoculars. Bring a notebook if you're the type. The paths can get boggy after rain, so don't expect manicured trails. What you get instead is something genuine - a bit rough around the edges perhaps, but that's rather the point of a nature reserve. Children might enjoy spotting wildlife if they've got patience; younger ones will probably get restless.
