Methven & Logiealmond Church

The churchyard at Methven sits quietly off the main drag between Perth and Crieff, and it's the sort of place you'll only find if you're actually looking. The church itself is substantial - pale stone, proper Highland proportions - but it's what's buried here that draws people in. This is where the Battle of Methven was fought in 1306, and Robert the Bruce's forces took a hammering. Walking the grounds, you get a real sense of why he lost. The terrain's tight, enclosed, nothing like the open moorland where he'd have wanted to fight.

The church building dates from medieval times, though it's been rebuilt more than once. Inside, the space is cool and austere - stone flags, clear glass, the usual Presbyterian sobriety. There's a fair amount of local history written into the walls if you bother to read the plaques. It's genuinely interesting stuff, though not the sort of thing that'll keep kids entertained beyond ten minutes.

Allow maybe thirty to forty minutes for a proper poke around, longer if you're into Scottish medieval history or military tactics. There's a small car park right there. It's free to wander the churchyard, though visiting inside depends on whether they've got the door unlocked - worth checking at the local tourist office in Perth first.
