Millhaugh

The Roman fort at Millhaugh sits quietly on the outskirts of Perth, easy to miss if you're not looking for it. What you'll find is a low earthwork - basically a rectangular platform with slight banks - that once housed a garrison on the frontier of the Roman Empire. It's not dramatic, and there's no visitor infrastructure here, but that's rather the point. You're standing on ground where soldiers from Italy, Spain and North Africa once stood guard nearly two thousand years ago.

This works best for archaeology enthusiasts or anyone keen on Roman Scotland. Casual visitors who want interpretation boards and a café might find themselves disappointed. Allow twenty minutes to walk the perimeter and take in the scale - it's roughly a football pitch in size. The landscape around it tells the story as much as the earthwork itself; you can see why the Romans chose this spot, commanding views across the Tay valley towards hostile territory.

Millhaugh is free to access and there's no admission gate - it's simply there in the landscape. Visit on a clear day; low winter light actually shows the earthworks better than summer sunshine. As part of a Perthshire holiday, it makes sense combined with a stay at Luxury Hideaways or Newmill Farm, both nearby. You could easily pair it with other Roman sites in the region or simply use it as a short walk break while touring the area. Not essential viewing, but worthwhile if you're already in Perth.
