Merrydale Clough

There's a steep-sided valley cut through West Yorkshire moorland that most people driving past Elland completely miss. Merrydale Clough is the sort of place that rewards a proper wander - a natural gorge where the stream has carved deep into the landscape over centuries, leaving you surrounded by wooded slopes and the sound of water running below.

It's walkers' territory, really. The paths can be muddy and narrow in places, so decent boots matter. You're looking at an hour or two depending on how far you venture up or down the clough - it's not a quick tick-box visit. The geology is interesting if you're into that sort of thing; the exposed rock faces tell you quite a bit about what's underneath the Pennines.

The real appeal is the sense of proper countryside just sitting there, undeveloped and honest. It's not manicured or managed to death. Families with young kids might find it a bit relentless underfoot, and there's no café or facilities, so come prepared. Spring and autumn are best - summer can feel cramped and overgrown in the narrower sections, while winter turns everything slippery.

Worth combining with a stay at Secret Valley Escapes or Holme Valley if you're spending a few days exploring the Calderdale area. Both are within five miles and offer proper bases for walking country. Merrydale isn't the dramatic showstopper some valleys are, but it's exactly the kind of place that makes you remember why you came to Yorkshire in the first place.
