Merlin's Cave

The cave itself isn't much to look at - a modest limestone hollow set into the cliffside above Bodmin Moor - but the legend attached to it is what draws people in. This is supposedly where Merlin the magician retreated after King Arthur's downfall, though frankly the archaeology doesn't back that up. What you actually get is a short scramble down from the car park, a quick peek inside the cave mouth, and views across the moorland that frankly don't require you to venture inside at all.

It's free to visit, which is the main thing going for it. Allow maybe twenty minutes if you're genuinely interested in Arthurian mythology, ten if you're just passing through. The walk down is straightforward enough but can be muddy after rain, and the cave itself is shallow - you're not exploring for hours here.

History enthusiasts will find the Merlin connection more interesting than the actual geology, though Bodmin's medieval priory ruins nearby offer more substantial stuff to chew on. If you're staying at Rosebud Farm Touring Park, the cave makes a decent half-hour diversion on a moorland walk, combining it with the broader landscape rather than treating it as a destination in itself. The real draw of this area is the walking and the space, not any single attraction. Worth seeing if you're already exploring Bodmin Moor, less worthwhile if you're making a special trip.
