Merkinch Local Nature Reserve (North end)

The northern end of Merkinch Local Nature Reserve sits on the edge of Inverness like a proper secret - most visitors miss it entirely, heading straight for the town centre instead. It's a wetland reserve where the River Ness widens out before hitting the Moray Firth, and the birdwatching here is genuinely excellent. Bring binoculars and you'll spot ospreys, herons, and if you're lucky, sea eagles drifting overhead.

The walk itself is straightforward. There's a path that loops around the marshland, taking you through reed beds and across wooden boardwalks - muddy in winter, but manageable most of the year. Allow ninety minutes if you're going slowly with a camera or notebook. If you're rushing, forty minutes covers it.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit quiet and bird-focused to hold attention for long, but anyone serious about wildlife or photography will rate this highly. The light here is lovely in late afternoon, particularly in spring and autumn when the migration brings in proper numbers of birds.

It's free to access and there's parking near the entrance. From here, you're only 2-3 miles from several decent caravan parks - Coulmore Bay and Bunchrew are both close by if you're basing yourself in the area for a few days. Ardtower and the Loch Ness glamping sites offer slightly more space if you want to feel less crowded. Worth an hour or two while you're in Inverness, though not a reason to plan your whole trip around it.
