Merkinch Free Church

The Merkinch Free Church sits just north of Inverness, a straightforward Victorian building that won't blow your mind but rewards a quick visit if you're passing through. It's a working church, so you'll need to time it right - services on Sundays, obviously, but the building itself is accessible outside hours if the doors aren't locked. The interior is typical Free Church: white walls, simple timber pews, high ceiling. No grand stained glass or elaborate stonework. What strikes you is the quietness and the sense of purpose - this is a genuine community space, not a museum piece.

It's really only worth a ten-minute stop unless you're particularly interested in Highland church architecture or the history of the Free Church movement in Scotland. Kids won't get much out of it. Walkers on their way up to the Inverness castle or around the Ness Islands might incorporate it into a longer morning, but it's not a destination in itself.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Bunchrew, Coulmore Bay, or Ardtower - you're ten minutes' drive away, so it's easy to slot in before heading into Inverness town centre proper. Go Glamping at Loch Ness is slightly further out but still accessible. Free to enter, no facilities on site. Best visited midweek when it's genuinely quiet, not fighting crowds that don't really exist here anyway.
