Meridian Line

The Prime Meridian line runs through Lincolnshire, and you can actually stand on it near Boston - one foot in the Eastern Hemisphere, the other in the Western. It's the sort of thing that sounds gimmicky until you're actually there, then it properly does your head in.

There's not much to see, to be honest. No visitor centre, no gift shop, no interpretive panels explaining why this invisible line matters. Just the meridian itself, marked on the landscape. For geography enthusiasts and anyone who gets excited by coordinates and cardinal directions, it's a pilgrimage worth making. Kids find it daft and brilliant in equal measure - most manage about ten minutes before asking if there's anything else to do.

It's completely free and you can visit any time. The beauty of it is exactly that simplicity. No opening hours to check, no admission fees, no crowds queuing for photos. Just you, the landscape, and the knowledge that you're standing on one of the world's most important invisible lines.

If you're staying at New Farm Holidays, Wood Farm Camping, or any of the other sites dotted around Boston, this makes a decent half-hour detour on a drive. Combine it with a walk around the marshes or a proper look at Boston's medieval church - the Stump - and you've got a solid afternoon. The surrounding Lincolnshire countryside is flat and windswept, but that's rather the point. Come for the meridian, stay for the wide skies.
