Menceles Trig point

A trig point is one of those Ordnance Survey markers you spot on hilltops across Britain - basically a stone pillar with a flat top used for mapping. Menceles sits at 1,083 feet in the Cheviot Hills, a proper vantage point above Alnwick way. The walk to reach it is the main event here, not the marker itself, though there's something satisfying about standing at a measured point and knowing exactly where you are.

This is walker territory. You're not turning up for ten minutes - the trek demands proper boots and an hour minimum, likely more depending on your pace and which approach you take from the surrounding moors. Families with young legs will manage it fine; toddlers, less so. The views across Northumberland once you're up there justify the effort. Clear days reward you properly.

It's free, naturally. There are no opening hours or facilities - it's just moorland and mountain. Go in decent weather; mist and Menceles don't mix well. If you're based at River Breamish Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just three miles away, this makes an excellent half-day excursion. Highburn House and Riverside Wooler are both workable bases too, though slightly further afield. Combine it with other Cheviot walks in the area rather than treating it as a standalone outing. Worth doing if you're already walking the hills; not worth the trip from Alnwick town centre alone unless you're keen on trig point hunting.
