Melwood Local Nature Reserve

A modest stretch of woodland and grassland just outside Royston that punches above its weight if you know what to look for. Melwood Local Nature Reserve is the sort of place locals cherish and passing visitors often miss - which is rather the point of it.

The reserve sits on former farmland that's been allowed to rewild itself properly. You get proper mixed woodland, open meadows that are brilliant for wildflowers in late spring and early summer, and a network of paths that take you through the lot without much fuss. The whole thing is maybe 40 hectares, so you're not talking about a day-long expedition - more like a solid hour's walk if you dawdle and actually look at things.

Birdwatchers will get the most out of it, particularly in spring and autumn when migrants pass through. The meadow sections attract butterflies and common orchids if conditions have been decent. It's genuinely good for families too - the paths are manageable, there's enough space for kids to burn off energy, and you might spot rabbits or muntjac deer if you're quiet enough.

The reserve doesn't have the wow factor of some nature reserves - no dramatic water features or rare species guarantees - but it's proper Essex countryside without the crowds.
