Mellanshaw Hill

The walk up Mellanshaw Hill rewards you with proper views across the South Lanarkshire countryside. It's not a slog - the climb's manageable from Biggar, and once you're at the top you can see why locals bother with it. The landscape opens out in all directions, rolling farmland and distant hills that make the effort worthwhile. It's the kind of walk that takes an hour or so depending on your pace and how many times you stop to catch your breath. Walkers will get the most from this one. If you're staying at Mount View Caravan Park just outside Biggar, this is ideal for a morning outing - back in time for lunch, or stay late and watch the light change across the valleys. The hill itself is free to access, and there's a genuine sense of accomplishment when you reach the summit. Nothing fancy or touristy about it - just a decent local hill with decent views and the kind of peace you actually remember. Spring and autumn are your best bets weatherwise, though even in winter the exposed ridge gets the attention of proper hillwalkers.
