Meikle Elrick

The walk up Meikle Elrick from Ballater is straightforward enough, and on a clear day you get proper views across Royal Deeside that justify the effort. It's not a mountain - more a substantial hill that takes a couple of hours from the town itself, depending on your pace and which route you take from the lower slopes.

What makes it worthwhile is the accessibility. Unlike some of the bigger peaks round here, you don't need scrambling skills or serious kit. Walkers of moderate fitness will manage it fine, though the path can be boggy after rain so decent boots matter. The real draw is standing up there looking south toward Braemar and across the valley. On a grey Scottish afternoon it's moody; on a sunny one it's genuinely lovely.

It works best as a half-day outing, leaving you time to explore Ballater itself - a neat little Victorian town with some decent shops and cafes. If you're staying at Braemar Caravan Park, which is only a few miles away, it's an easy drive over and makes for good exercise between days at the park.

There's no visitor centre or facilities on the hill itself, so bring water and perhaps a packed lunch. Free to walk, obviously. Most people will want to allow three hours total including a stop at the top. Worth doing if you're in the area and want a proper walk without committing to a full Cairngorms expedition.
