The woodland near Royston isn't marked on every map, but locals know it well. Meesdenhall Wood delivers proper Essex countryside - the sort of place where you actually feel removed from the A10 corridor that dominates this part of the world.

It's a straightforward woodland walk with established paths threading through mixed deciduous trees. Nothing dramatic, nothing rare, just honest English woodland. You'll get maybe 45 minutes to an hour of decent walking depending on how you route it, and the ground stays reasonably dry even after rain thanks to the sandy Essex soil.

The appeal here is simple: it works brilliantly as a palate cleanser between bigger attractions. Families with young kids find it manageable - no steep climbs, no exposed drops - though there's not much to keep under-fives genuinely engaged beyond "look, sticks". Walkers and dog owners make regular use of it, and that's who gets the most value.

Pair it with a night or two at Pightle Farm Campsite just over 5 miles away, and you've got a proper woodland base without the crowds you'd hit at the bigger Essex nature reserves. The campsite scores well with families, and it's positioned perfectly for exploring this quieter corner of East Anglia.

The wood's free to access, no formal visitor centre or facilities, so take what you need. Best visited autumn through spring when you're not dodging school holidays and the paths are firm. Worth the detour if you're in the area and want space to breathe.
