Medieval Farmstead and open field system

You won't find gift shops or admission fees here - just the actual earthworks of a medieval village laid bare across the Durham countryside. The open field system is what gets archaeologists excited: ridge-and-furrow patterns that tell you exactly how medieval farmers organised their land, with strips running like corduroy across the slope. The farmstead itself sits within these fields, the outlines of buildings still visible if you know what you're looking for.

This is proper history that requires a bit of work to read. You're not getting interpretive boards or marked-out paths - you need to walk it, feel the slopes under your feet, and understand how those ridges funneled water between crops. It rewards walkers and history nerds far more than casual passers-by. Kids might manage twenty minutes before asking when you're heading to the cafe.

The nearest proper base is Stockton-on-Tees, but Donnewell Farm Caravan and Motorhome Club CL sits just over four miles away and gives you a proper countryside position for exploring this sort of landscape. Combine it with other Durham archaeology sites rather than making it a standalone trip.

Go in spring or early autumn when the grass is cropped short enough to see the earthworks properly. Summer growth obscures them. Winter can be muddy underfoot, though the angles show better when light's low. Allow an hour if you're really studying the field patterns, but honestly you can walk it in half that.
